What’s on this summer: Ontario Family Fishing Events

Now that summer is here it's nearly time to enjoy the second of this years designated license-free fishing time, in July. As you are probably aware, the Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide chance for all Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without an outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods in a year as license-free. This year the dates were February 15-17 and coming again in July 5-13, 2014 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday). At any other time in the year Canadian residents between the age of 18 and 64 years must have a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario. However, please remember that during these license-free periods, anglers still need to continue to abide by the Conservation fishing license limits which are set out in the current Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary. Ontario fishing regulations, fees and limits continue to apply during license-free day. These regulations can be found online at Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources website There are many other events going on all over the province during these designated periods: festivals, clinics, derbies and workshops are hosted across the province. For more information and dates, go to Once such event is the Grand River Bass Derby, one of the most popular fishing events in southern Ontario, to be held on July 5th and 6th, 2014, organized by Natural Sports and The Optimist Club of Stanley Park. The derby is both an Ontario Family Fishing Weekend Event as well as a National Fishing Week official event, with over $6000 in prizes for juniors, youth and adults alike. There is a 100% live release for smallmouth bass on the Grand River. Registration for the event is now open.
