The Ultimate Guide to Boat Storage

While our boating season may be shorter than that of our neighbours to the south, we Canadians sure know how to make the most of summer!  Yes, it’s true, most of us live for those long sunny days spent cruising around on the water.

That said, unless you plan on attaching skis to your boat (I highly recommend not doing this) or plan to move to

the always sunny Florida, you are going to have to make a game plan for boat storage during the winter months.

There is no question about it, you need to protect and store your boat!

Because cooler climates won’t allow you to leave your boat in the water year round, it will need to be stored out of water for several months, and if done improperly this can lead to corrosion, mildew, or other damages that you really just don't want to deal with.

So now that we are all on board with the necessity of boat storage, let’s talk about your boat protection and storing options...

the ultimate guide to boat storage.

Shrink Wrap:

Shrink wrapping your boat will not only effectively protect your boat from the elements, it will also keep out those little critters looking for a place to call home!

Although you can tackle this project yourself to save a few dollars, you are going to want to thoroughly dry out your boat beforehand to avoid trapping moisture inside, which can lead to condensation or mould.  Also make sure to add plenty of vents to the installation to allow any potential moisture to escape.

Alternatively, leave the task to the pros!  You can contact your nearest Legend Boats Dealer to find out more about the benefits professional shrink wrapping.  Click here to access our dealer locator.

A good ol’ tarp may be a better option for the more frugal boater.  While this option will not give the same protection as shrink wrap, it will still prevent the accumulation of rain and snow.  As for those little critters, tarp at your own risk!

What is the best option for storing my boat?

The main things to consider when making your decision on where to store your boat will be: budget, availability, convenience and accessibility.

Thankfully there are a few options available to meet most boater's storage needs.

Storage Facility:

There are a variety of fenced in secured storage facilities that will allow you to rent space to store your boat during the winter months.

Did you know that Legend Boats acts as a one-stop-shop for all your boat storage needs?  Yup, we are all about making every aspect of your boating experience positive and memorable, including the protection and maintenance of your boat when it isn't on the water!

Self Storage:

If you’re looking for ways to save a few bucks with boating storage you may want to consider using a self storage option.

Likely the most cost effective, trailering your boat is as simple as covering up your boat and trailer and parking it in your driveway or backyard!

Granted this is the most labour intensive method of storage, should you have some extra space at home that you are willing to free up and your local bylaws allow for a trailer in your backyard or driveway, this is an affordable method of keeping the worst of the elements away.

At the end of the day the priority is really about keeping your boat in great condition during the off season so you can get the most out of it when warmer days roll around again!

Happy Boating!
